Mr. Butt concentrates his practice on patent portfolio development, primarily through the preparation and prosecution of patents.

Practice Areas & Background

Prior to joining KLS, Mr. Butt gained significant experience as a patent attorney at large law firms and IP boutique firm. His areas of focus include e-commerce, electronic navigation systems, computer processors, database management systems, payment processing systems, mobile applications, web applications, graphical user interfaces, augmented reality systems, electronic gaming machines, and cloud storage and services. Mr. Butt excels at identifying and overcoming patent eligibility (§101) issues at all stages of patent preparation and prosecution.

Prior to becoming an attorney, Mr. Butt gained significant technical experience in the areas of website security, database management, directory services, and enterprise software management as a senior analyst for a global consulting company.

Mr. Butt earned his J.D. from DePaul University College of Law. He participated in the Giles Rich Moot Court Competition, was president of the DePaul IP Law Society, and won the CALI Award for the best grade in the IP for Corporate Transactional Lawyers course. He graduated from DePaul University with a B.S. in Computer Science.
